Choice Dambuza: Championing issues of women in football

Choice Dambuza isn’t just a football coach; she's a champion for women in sports.

Born in Zimbabwe’s Zvishavane District, Dambuza’s passion for the game ignited early, leading her to pursue a career in coaching and empower the next generation of female athletes.

Dambuza’s journey began on the field, playing for Correctional Queens FC. Her dedication and talent contributed to the team’s promotion to the Super League in 2008. Transitioning to coaching, she guided the team to victory in the Independence Trophy twice, in 2014 and 2018, further solidifying her leadership and strategic prowess.

However, Dambuza recognizes the challenges women face in the male-dominated world of football. "Gender stereotypes," she says, "are deeply ingrained. Women often battle biases, lack of financial support, and even safety concerns."

Undeterred, Dambuza has become a vocal advocate for change. She actively combats these barriers by promoting gender equality in sports, speaking out against discrimination, and fostering a supportive community for female athletes. This includes initiatives like introducing safeguarding officers in women's football clubs and providing life skills workshops to empower young women.

Dambuza's inspiration stems from trailblazers like Rosemary Mugadza and Sithethelelwe Sibanda, who paved the way for women in football. Their dedication motivates Dambuza to continue pushing boundaries and breaking down stereotypes.

Beyond the field, Dambuza embraces her roles as a wife and mother of three. She thrives on creating a loving family environment while pursuing her passion.

Offering valuable advice to young aspiring individuals, Dambuza emphasizes the importance of unwavering pursuit of dreams, lifelong learning, and kindness. "Hard work, resilience, and standing up for what you believe in are key," she says. "And always remember to enjoy the journey!"
