No Zimbabwe School Examination Council staffer has been arrested so far while police have nabbed 109 candidates over allegations of sharing the leaked Ordinary Level Mathematics Paper One.
“Police have arrested 109 pupils for allegedly leaking the Ordinary Level Mathematics Paper One. The number of cases linked to that paper has risen from 11 to 28 nationwide,” said police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
If convicted, the candidates face up to one year in prison or fines.
He said that school and exam officials allegedly involved in leaking the paper also face arrests.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will ensure that arrests are effected on anyone who is illegally circulating examination papers on social media and physically to the public.”
Zimsec says it is working on more punitive punishments for candidates who pre-access papers.
Spokesperson, Ms Nicholette Dlamini said the Zimsec Act was being amended to come down hard on candidates who access leaked papers:
“The Zimsec Act will be amended so that we have harsh penalties for illegal pre-access to exam papers aside from just cancelling the exams.
This includes having additional punitive measures which include having the particular pupil’s examination result annulled.”
She did not explain how Zimsec is dealing with the security breaches in its own system to ensure that exams are credible.
Exam papers were being openly sold on social media in the past few weeks.

Ms Dlamini said candidates will have to wait a bit longer to know if they face re-writes of the leaked paper.
