Zimbabwe tobacco exports increased by 106% in January and February generating US$1.564 billion from the 2022/23 tobacco season exports.

The volume of tobacco exported in January and February 2024 was 56.5 m kg, from the 27.6 m kg exported during the same period in 2023.

This adds to US$1.224 billion generated until December 2023.

Zimbabwe had its best tobacco production season in 2023, after deliveries reached a record 296 million kg.

The value of tobacco also increased, reaching 369.6 million in 2024 compared to 122.2 million in 2023.

The 2017/18 season produced 236 million kg while the 2019/20 season produced 252.5 million kg.

TIMB spokesperson, Chelesani Tsarwe said that while the previous season saw a record high of 296 million kgs of tobacco, this year’s projection is around 250 million kgs due to the dry spell experienced.

Tobacco expert, Phineas Mukomeranwa said the 2023/2024 might realise lower volumes than last year as tobacco farmers were affected by low rains.

This year’s season will be open tomorrow at the Tobacco Sales Floor.

Meanwhile, last month TIMB released a transporter guideline that is meant to minimise losses and enhance farmer viability.

The system monitors the movement of tobacco from the primary source to the market.

Meanwhile, the tobacco marketing season will be officially opened by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga in Harare today.
