South Africa withdraws hockey teams from African Games over sub-standard pitch

South Africa’s dream run at the 13th African Games has been cut short for their hockey teams. Both the men’s and women’s teams have opted out of the competition, citing concerns about the playing surface at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch in Accra, Ghana.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee released a statement expressing their disappointment with the venue’s condition. They claim the pitch “was not sufficiently prepared to stage the competition” and “posed potential injury risks to their players,” according to independent specialists.

Team SA had already secured qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, making player safety a paramount concern.  “We cannot afford to risk the health of our athletes on substandard facilities,” emphasised Patience Shikwambana, Team SA’s team leader.

South Africa’s withdrawal highlights the importance of proper infrastructure in international sporting events. The incident raises questions for the Local Organising Committee and the African Hockey Federation regarding the venue'’s preparation.

Despite the setback, the African Games hockey competition continues with teams like Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana battling for gold.
