Man bites police officer to evade arrest

A man who allegedly bit a police officer after being arrested has been taken to court.

Godknows Chingwaru, 24, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with assaulting a peace officer.

He will appear in court today for bail application.

The State, through prosecutor Thomas Chanakira, alleges that on March 18, at 32-kilometre peg Harare-Makumbe Road, Chingwaru resisted arrest and assaulted the arresting officer.

It is alleged that he bit his right hand middle finger.

Chingwaru told the court that he had no option because he was not happy with the way he was handled.

“I bit the police officer’s finger because he was suffocating me and putting their fingers in my nose. So, I took the opportunity to bite his finger so that he let me go. I deny assaulting the officer or resisting arrest,” he said.
