ZIFA has pledged to strengthen spectator-safety measures after a fan died and others were injured during the Zimbabwe-DRC match at the National Sports Stadium on Monday.
ZIFA said it is working with the Zimbabwe Republic Police and other stakeholders to establish what happened at Gate 2, where the incident occurred.
“ZIFA is working closely with all stakeholders and the Zimbabwe Republic Police to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident at Gate 2 and address safety concerns,” the association said.
The football governing body said it would support due process to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the death are fully addressed.
ZIFA expressed its condolences to the deceased supporter’s family and friends, while wishing injured fans a full and speedy recovery.
“On behalf of the Executive Committee, players, technical staff and the entire football family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends,” ZIFA said.

The incident has also prompted the association to review matchday operations, with ZIFA saying it will work with authorities and stadium stakeholders to identify shortcomings and strengthen measures designed to protect spectators.
The development comes shortly after ZIFA issued assurances ahead of the Zimbabwe-Mauritius U23 AFCON qualifier at the same stadium that enhanced security arrangements and additional stewards would be deployed. The association had also said turnstiles and ticket scanners had been tested and that measures were in place to ensure orderly entry and movement of supporters.
Fans had been urged to arrive early, use the designated gates shown on their tickets and cooperate with stewards and security officials, with ZIFA saying it was working with stakeholders to manage entry, movement inside the stadium and departure efficiently.
ZIFA said the safety and wellbeing of everyone attending football matches remained a priority.
“Our thoughts remain with the bereaved family, the injured and everyone affected,” the association said.
