Man up for stealing oil

Michael Mashiri

A man who allegedly stole US$89 000 worth of oil has been taken to court.

Arthur Chitiyo, 46, of Glen View, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with theft of trust property.

He was ordered to appear in court on April  30.

The complainant in this matter is Boniface Mudzingwa.

The State alleges that in February, Mudzingwa met Chitiyo at Fife Avenue Shopping Centre where he told him that he could supply oil called Light Straight Run, which is a product of distillation of crude oil.

Although Mudzingwa was not familiar with the product, he was interested considering the profit he would get after the oil had been resold.

The State alleges that Chitiyo promised Mudzingwa that he would dispose the oil on Chitiyo’s behalf since Chitiyo did not any market of the products.

Mudzingwa asked for 89 000 litres of the oil and Chitiyo ordered him to pay R1 453 750.

The State alleges that on February 13, Mudzingwa transferred the money as had been instructed Chitiyo.

Mudzingwa confirmed receiving the money and told Chitiyo to send the trucks to carry the oil.

Mudzingwa sent gas trucks and the oil was loaded and brought to Zimbabwe.

After the oil arrived in the country, Chitiyo then took the trucks from Mudzingwa’s garage saying he was going to sell it on behalf of Mudzingwa.

It is alleged that Chitiyo, however sold the oil and converted the money to his use.

Mudzingwa tried to make a followup with him but failed to get in touch with him.

After a long time trying to engage Chitiyo, Mudzingwa realised that he had been duped and made a police report.

As a result, Mudzingwa lost US$89 000.
