A man who allegedly defrauded the complainant more than US$14 000 has been taken to court.
Thomas Mangeren, 40, of Dulibadzimu, Beitbridge, appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with fraud.
He will appear in court on April 2.
The State, through prosecutor Loveti Muringwa, alleges that Mangeren lied to the complainant that he was an agent who could help facilitate payment of duty for his South African registered car, a Toyota Hilux.
In pursuance to his plan, Mangeren sent to complainant two different assessment numbers N13111and N18141 claimed to be from Zimra for duty of the complainant’s car.
The complainant was made to deposit US$6 400 and US$5 936 using the assessment numbers.
After the transaction, it is alleged that Mangeren became evasive and ignored the complainant who later decided to dig deeper by visiting Zimra offices for verification and was informed that his car had not yet paid duty.
He then decided to report the matter to the police, leading to Mangeren’s arrest.
Investigations revealed that the assessment numbers sent by Mangeren to the complainant were for the payment of duty for two different cars.
As a result, the complainant was prejudiced of US$14 336.
