Three men, who allegedly took advantage of a fire that had broken out in the complainant’s shop and stole flex cables from there, have been taken to court.

Tawanda Kadungure, 31, of Hopley Zone 1, Obert Maruma, 36, of Kuwadzana Extension and John Mlambo, 24, of Epworth, appeared before magistrate Donald Ndirowei at the Harare Magistrates’' Courts charged with theft.

They were remanded in custody.

The State, through prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, alleges that on March 31, the complainant, was told by his security guard that there was a fire at his shop located at number 93 Harare Street and that he was removing some goods from the shop and putting them outside for safety from the fire.

The complainant rushed there, when he got there, the fire had already been put off by the City of Harare’s Fire Brigade.

The complainant was then called by one of his neighbours telling him that the three accused were selling flex cable connectors from his shop.

The complainant teamed up with his colleague and went to the neighbour’s shop and found out that accused had already left.

The neighbours shown the complainant the direction which the three had used and he pursued them.

The complainant caught the three accused at corner Mbuya Nehanda and Abercon Street and Kadungure was counting flex cable connectors which were inside a grey satchel, intending to sale them in one of the hardware shops there while Maruma and Mlambo were standing by his side.

The complainant apprehended the accused and recovered 34 flex cables before taking the suspects to the police.

As a result, US$2 500 worth of flex cables had been stolen.
