The country’s extractive sector recorded 33 fatalities and 27 serious injuries in 37 accidents in the first two months of 2024, official statistics show.
Of the 33 fatalities, 17 were a result of fall of ground, eight from shaft accidents, five were classified as sundry accidents while gassing and blasting recorded three fatalities each.
Hoist rope failure, slippery ground, tracking and tramming, fall from height and accidental detonation contributed one fatality each.
Mashonaland Central Province recorded three fatalities in January and one in February, Mashonaland West one in January and eight in February; Matabeleland South (two and one), Midlands (seven and five), Mashonaland East (two and one), Matabeleland North (two and zero) while Manicaland recorded none in both months.
