Former Zimbabwean football star, Benjani Mwaruwari, has embarked on a new chapter in his career, transitioning from striker to coach. After a brief stint in Zimbabwean football management, Mwaruwari is now honing his coaching skills at English Championship side Plymouth Argyle, working with their youth teams.
Mwaruwari secured a coveted spot in Plymouth Argyle’s “Players to Coaches” scheme, a joint initiative designed to equip former footballers with coaching skills. He has spent the past four months working with the club's academy, guiding players from the Under-13 to Under-18 age groups.
This move follows a challenging experience as head coach of Ngezi Platinum Stars in Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League. Despite a four-year contract, Mwaruwari’s tenure lasted less than six months. After a string of underwhelming results, the club opted for a change in leadership.
Unfazed by the setback, Mwaruwari returned to England, his sights set on developing his coaching expertise. Plymouth Argyle academy manager Phil Stokes expressed his delight at having Mwaruwari on board, highlighting the positive impact he’s already made, particularly with the young forwards.
Stokes outlined the comprehensive training program Mwaruwari is undergoing. He’ll gain experience across all age groups, from pre-academy to professional development. This structured approach will equip him with the necessary skills to potentially become a permanent member of the Plymouth Argyle coaching staff in the future.
Mwaruwari draws inspiration from former South African striker Bennie McCarthy, who currently coaches strikers at Manchester United. He aspires to follow a similar path and is grateful for the opportunity to learn from Plymouth Argyle’s experienced coaches.
Mwaruwari expressed his enthusiasm about his time in England, acknowledging the significant knowledge he has gained in a short period. He’s relishing the opportunity to work with players of various age groups and contribute to their development.
Mwaruwari’s current Uefa A Licence provides a strong foundation, but he aspires to acquire the prestigious Pro Licence. This qualification would significantly enhance his coaching prospects.
