A 31-year-old man, Prosper Mufanebadza, who is contracted by the Zimbabwe Power Company was arrested for stealing and selling diesel from a fuel tanker.

Mufanebadza appeared before the Hwange Magistrates’ Courts facing allegations of theft.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, on April 1, 2024, Mufanebadza was assigned to transport 40 000 litres of diesel from the National Oil Company of Zimbabwe, Harare to ZPC Hwange.

“Whilst in transit, the accused person allegedly stole diesel from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd compartments of his fuel tanker and sold it to one Innocent Ngwenya in Harare.

“He then replaced the fuel with an unknown substance.

“The matter came to light on the 2nd of April 2024 when the accused person arrived in Hwange and ZPC employees carried out tests which revealed that the texture of the substance in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd compartments was less dense, a quality which is inconsistent with diesel,” the NPA said.

A report was made to the police, leading to Mufanebadza’s arrest.

The total contaminated diesel was 20 000 litres.

The accused person was granted US$300 bail.
