Disagreements arise as Prophet Walter Magaya seeks acquisition of key Chitungwiza assets

Tensions are running high among Chitungwiza councillors as a divisive debate unfolds over the proposed acquisition bid by Prophet Walter Magaya for several council properties.

The prominent religious figure has expressed interest in obtaining crucial assets, sparking a wave of contention within the local government.

Among the properties sought by Prophet Magaya are the master plan, Civic Centre, Chibuku  Stadium, Unit L Hall and Ground, and Chikomo, each of which holds significant importance in the municipal landscape.

However, the bid has divided the council, with approximately half of the councillors, including the Town Clerk, vehemently opposing the move.

The disagreement stems from concerns regarding the potential implications of such a transaction on the municipality’s assets and the broader community.

While Magaya has reportedly promised substantial financial investments, skepticism remains prevalent among those opposed to the deal.

Questions have been raised regarding the transparency of the negotiation process, as well as the long-term repercussions for Chitungwiza residents.

“The master plan is a vital document that outlines the future development of our town. Handing it over to a private entity raises serious concerns about the integrity of our urban planning process,” voiced one resident, echoing the sentiments of many who oppose the acquisition bid. “We need assurance that our interests, as residents, will not be sidelined in favour of profit-driven agendas.”:

Similarly, residents expressed apprehension about the potential privatization of public amenities such as the civic centre and Chibuku Stadium. “These facilities serve as communal spaces for gatherings, events, and recreational activities. If they fall into private hands, there’s a real risk of restricted access and inflated fees,” said Tendai Muwashu of Unit A.

“We must safeguard these assets for the benefit of the entire community, not just for the profit of a few.”

Amid the discord, Magaya’s assurances of substantial financial returns have failed to assuage the apprehensions of dissenting councillors and community members.

While acknowledging the potential injection of funds into the municipality, opponents of the deal stress the importance of safeguarding public assets and ensuring transparent governance practices.

The rift within the council underscores broader tensions surrounding the role of private entities in municipal affairs and the delicate balance between development and public interest.

As deliberations continue, stakeholders are closely monitoring the proceedings, mindful of the profound implications of any decision regarding the fate of Chitungwiza’s critical assets.
