A high-ranking officer within the Zimbabwe Republic Police drew criticism recently for his cold response to a heartfelt plea from Constable F. Chitembetembe.
The constable, seeking a transfer to be closer to his son enrolled in a special school, faced a blunt refusal from Assistant Commissioner Tawonei Nyazema, the Officer Commanding Mashonaland West Province.
Constable Chitembetembe’s request for transfer from Siakobvu in Kariba to Kadoma, where his son Donald attends Rubatsiro Zimcare Trust, was met with a harsh ultimatum: resign within 24 hours or remain at his current post. This decision left many dismayed, especially considering the genuine family circumstances prompting the request.
Donald’s mother, Lorine Chuma, also a teacher, is stationed away from Kadoma, making it difficult for the constable to adequately support his son’s needs while stationed elsewhere.
However, following widespread outrage, Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga stepped in to rectify the situation. He swiftly overturned the initial decision, acknowledging the urgency of Constable Chitembetembe’s family situation. Matanga directed the ZRP’s Human Resources Department to prioritise the constable’s family welfare.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, issued a statement expressing gratitude to those who raised concerns over the matter. The swift action taken by the Commissioner-General underscores the importance of considering officers’ family circumstances and welfare within the force.
