Riverton Academy in Masvingo has reportedly threatened learners that they will not be considered for future programmes if they failed to turn up for vacation lessons.

“Following your requests as parents or guardians on consultation days that the Academy offers extra help to your children during the holidays, we write to inform you that the deadline for your child to be in school is Thursday 18th April 2024.

“This enables us to be able to plan accordingly rather than have students coming in at any time.

“Those who may not turn up by the stated date will not be considered for future programmes over the holidays as well as over weekends.”

The school head said indicated that all this is done in the best interests of the child’s academic progress and the school does not have any ulterior motive behind.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has warned schools against vacations classes, saying those who defied the directive will face disciplinary action.

In an April letter to parents and guardians, the Riverton Academy head indicate that vacation school is not compulsory.

“Due to various reasons, not all parents may be able to send their children to school for that programme. Parents are therefore advised that vacation school in NOT compulsory.

The Masvingo-based private school confirmed both letter and e-mail when Zim Now sought clarification this morning.

“We want all learners who attend vacation school to be at the same level. Those who fail to attend now will not be at the same level with others when they come for August holiday classes,” said the school official who answered the call before referring this writer to one Mr Mutangiri for a comprehensive comment.

Towards the end of the first school term, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education issued a directive against vacation school across the country.

Announcing the ban, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Moses Mhike said that the term had progressed well with no hindrance hence there arises no need for vacation school.

“Having consulted widely on the matter and taking cognisant of the fact that the school term had no disturbances at all to the teaching and learning program, therefore, authority is NOT GRANTED that schools facilitate a Vacation School.

“Pupils needs this holiday break to rest and engage in independent learning where need be,” Mhike said then.
