A fuel theft scandal at Apex Energies has led to the arrest of Tafadzwa Gwara, who allegedly stole thousands of dollars’ worth of fuel with the assistance of an accomplice who remains at large.

The 41-year-old Gwara, from Kuwadzana 4, appeared at the Harare Magistrate’s Court facing fraud charges. He is set to appear again on August 19 for the setting of a trial date.

The State alleges that between February 1 and May 6, at Apex Energies (Apex Service Station) located at number 40 Kirkman Road and Seke, Chitungwiza, Gwara and his accomplice, Anesu Muyemeki, allegedly conspired to defraud the complainant of 4,833 liters of diesel and petrol valued at US$7,249.

The complainant had an agreement with Fossil Contracting, whereby Fossil Contracting would make prepayments for fuel for its vehicles, and an account was subsequently opened for them at Apex Energies.

However, Gwara and his accomplice allegedly exploited this arrangement by fueling their own vehicles and pocketing the money.

Upon reconciling with Fossil Contracting, the complainant discovered that vehicles not affiliated with Fossil Contracting had received fuel, prompting a report to the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Mabelreign.

The Criminal Investigation Department in Marlborough was then informed, leading to Gwara’s arrest.

As a result of the alleged theft, the complainant incurred losses amounting to US$7,249.
