Man fined US$400 for smuggling clothing, footwear

A 26-year-old man from Chirundu, Malvin Banda, was ordered to pay a fine of US$400 by the Karoi Magistrates’ Court for smuggling.

The accused person smuggled nine bales of clothing and footwear into the country through the Zambezi River.

Banda was part of a group of ten men who were caught smuggling goods and threw stones at soldiers on patrol.

The soldiers fired warning shots into the air after which the rifle jammed, prompting the smugglers to charge towards them.

The accused person attempted to disarm a soldier and he was shot on the right thigh during the scuffle, prompting his accomplices to flee the scene.

The accused person was arrested after he was discharged from a Lusaka hospital.

The State was prejudiced of ZWL$71 309 630 (about ZiG 28 524) and the goods were forfeited to the State.

He was ordered to pay a US$400 fine or 4 months’ imprisonment in case of default.
