Rare sporting talent was on display on Saturday as Allan Wilson Boys High School hosted an academy teams’ soccer tournament in three age categories.

Legends Academy took the top spot in the Under 9 category, followed closely by DC Academy in second place.

The Under 13 category saw BN Academy come out on top, once again with DC Academy finishing as the runners-up.

In the Under 15 category, Huphson Academy emerged as the champions, with 2M Academy earning the second-place spot.

The tournament, sponsored by Energy Park, was an opportunity to spread an important message - the dangers of drug and substance abuse.

In a nation where addiction is an ongoing concern, the tournament served as a platform for raising awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles for Zimbabwe’s youth.

The tournament attracted a diverse range of young talent, with eight teams competing in the Under 9 category, 13 teams in the Under 13 category, and 12 teams in the Under-15 category.

Speaking at the tournament, Sylvester Chirombo from Energy Park encouraged the young athletes to stay out of the streets and focus on their talent.

“For the young boys, I say guys keep it up, stay off the streets, and play football.

“To you parents, thank you for this wonderful day and for turning out in your numbers,” he said.

Energy Park promises to continue supporting the sport for the young people.

The tournament was hosted by DC Academy under the leadership of Dickson Choto.

In an interview with Zim Now, tournament patron Lloyd Tawanda Zindo said sport keeps young people busy so they do not have time to be involved in criminal activities.

“The purpose of the tournament is for the kids to feel that sport has results at the end of the day and to educate them to stay out of drugs. We want our kids to stay occupied during the holidays and weekends.

“Besides school, they can earn a living through sport, giving them enough time to try other things than school helps to spot the child's strength so I encourage parents to support their children in any sport, so that they won’t end up taking drugs in the streets,” Zindo said.

With the success of this tournament, Zindo expressed his intentions to host similar tournaments after every two months.
