Telecommunications giant, Econet Wireless has confirmed the introduction of a free remittance service for Zimbabweans based in the United Kingdom and South Africa, as the company seeks to help mitigate the El Niño-induced drought.

The telecoms firm’s breakthrough service, Sasai Money Transfer, a subsidiary of the Econet Group, will start offering services today.

The service will be free of charge and cash out fees, unlike the usual 15% remittance charges and 3% cash out fees.

In a statement, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe CEO, Dr Douglas Mboweni said that the free remittance service come as there are no third parties involved in the transaction processes.

He added that his company seeks to help Zimbabweans at large amid the El Niño-induced drought through providing free services, thereby ensuring they do not eat into people’s savings through remittance charges.

“We hope Zimbabweans in the Diaspora will use the savings to send more money home to their families. The majority of remittances to Zimbabwe are conducted through these two main corridors (the UK and South Africa). We do not have to pay any third parties on those corridors, because we rely on a sister company in the group, which agreed to help out,” Dr Mboweni said.

People in the UK and South Africa can send money by first downloading the Sasai Money Transfer on Google Play Store and App Store.

Econet also revealed that remittance transfers are accessible through the EcoCash US dollar wallet, subscribers should dial *153# on an registered EcoCash line.

For withdrawals, subscribers can use the same EcoCash wallet for free.
