The City of Harare has warned entities and individuals of an impending exercise to name and shame debtors in all its district’s social media pages, in a move to encourage settling of outstanding debts.

The City authorities have revealed that they are owed over ZiG940 million by residents, businesses, parastatals and government departments, with the debts  derailing effective service delivery.

Posting on X, City of Harare, which has also taken the legal route, said that it will begin the naming and shaming exercise after all debtors have been served with summons, in a bid to encourage payment of outstanding debts.

“The City of Harare is owed in excess of ZiG940 million by residents, businesses, parastatals and government departments among others. This is money that is needed to run the City operations and service delivery operations. We have since started issuing final demands and summons to our debtors.

“The summons will be served on all our debtors without fear or favour. The City will also embark on a name and shame exercise to encourage debtors to settle if they fail to honour their payments.

“Names of debtors will be posted on our social media platforms and at all district offices in Harare.

“To avoid the inconveniences of being taken to court with the possibility of losing property like houses, debtors are urged to immediately settle with the City. Our banking halls are open every week day from 8am to 5pm,” Council posted on X.

The City has been under fire from government and residents over their failed service delivery that has seen residents go for days without running wat
