Zimbabwe imported 410 667 tonnes of maize to cover a deficit due to the EL Nino phenomenon.
In January, the country imported 136 084 tonnes of maize valued at US$41.95 million.
In February, 145 354 tonnes were imported valued at US$43.7 million while in March the country imported 129,229 tonnes costing US$42.4 million.
The average bill spent on maize is 5.98%.
The 2023/2024 season estimated production is 868 273 tonnes.
The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe aims to import one million tonnes of grain by March 2025.
In April, President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a national disaster with over 2.7 million people lacking adequate food access due to low yields caused by the drought.
Following the declaration, government granted duty-free importation of maize, cooking oil and rice effective from July 2024.
Maize imports are expected to bring in 1.4 million tonnes by March 2025.
GMAZ has imported 427 000 tonnes of maize since October last year and Zimbabwe consumes about 2.2 million tonnes of maize annually.
The Grain Marketing Board has in stock 145 604 tonnes of maize, 43 964 tonnes of traditional grains and 244 705 tonnes of wheat in March.
