Zimbabwe’s handball teams kept their winning streak in the International Handball Federation tournament, defeating Malawi in both the Under-20 and Under-18 categories.
The Under 18s won 55-21, while the Under 20s delivered 44-16.
Both teams have now qualified for the semi-finals, where they will face even tougher competition on Friday.
In an interview with Zim Now, handball expert and Tigers coach, Innocent Kanosvova said that according to his analysis, the Under 20 boys have to step up a bit on their defence.
“For the Under 20 boys, I think it is good for the team if they can step up in terms of their defence because I was just doing an analysis and I saw that Zambia conceded less scores and scored more compared to our boys. We conceded a lot and scored less though we are number one in our group. Zambia are number one in their group but they are on top.
“We need to pull our socks up on our defence for both Under 18 and Under 20.”
Kanosvova predicted a win for both teams, but for Under 18s, he said there is a lot of individualism, so there is a need to build on their teamwork.
In a thrilling display of handball prowess, Lesotho, Zambia, and Mozambique emerged victorious over their opponents in the Under-20 category.
Lesotho secured a narrow 36-30 win over Namibia, while Zambia crushed South Africa 60-15. Mozambique also dominated their match against Swaziland, easily defeating them 50-19.
In an official statement from the Zimbabwe Handball Federation, all games are going to be played at Sunrise Sports Club tomorrow.
“Since tomorrow there will be four placement matches, we are going to use one venue, and this will be Sunrise Sports Club.”
The decision was made to cut costs and limit logistical challenges.
Games are starting at 1000 hours and end at 1600 hours.
