The 2024 Castle Tankard, Africa’s longest-running horse racing event, held true to its legendary status this past Saturday at Borrowdale Racecourse in Harare.

The day unfolded like a beautifully crafted story, brimming with exhilarating races, a vibrant culinary scene, and a musical extravaganza that left the audience spellbound.

Following the heart-pounding rush of the thoroughbreds thundering down the track, the festivities shifted gears into a high-octane concert. Leading the charge was the legendary sungura maestro, Alick Macheso, whose infectious energy ignited the packed venue.

Partnering with him was the reigning dancehall chanter, Freeman HKD, creating a collaborative masterpiece that transcended generations. Their performance of the hit song Ngaibake stood as a testament to the unifying power of music, a harmonious blend of established and rising stars.

This spirit of collaboration extended beyond the stage. Delta Beverages, through its iconic Castle Lager brand, kept the celebratory spirit flowing with an abundance of refreshments.

Food stalls overflowed with a delectable array of culinary delights, catering to every palate’s desire. The seamless execution of the event deserves its own applause, with everything running like a well-oiled machine.

The event wouldn’t have been complete without a captivating line-up of supporting acts. Master H, a rising star in his own right, commanded the stage with infectious energy, leaving the audience yearning for more. Bling 4, the hip-hop maestro, showcased his undeniable talent, offering a glimpse into his burgeoning stardom. Even the ever-reliable DJ Lroy and Nikki in the Stars added their own unique flavour to the mix.

However, the undisputed champion of the night was Alick Macheso and his Orchestra Mberikwazvo. Their performance was a masterclass in musicianship, a beautiful reminder of how Macheso’s inspiration from Borrowdale’s horses has translated into his captivating dance routines.

The audience, recognising the presence of a living legend, erupted in a thunderous “siyanai naye Macheso” (let Macheso be), a testament to his enduring legacy. As Macheso brought the curtain down on the event, one thing was certain – the 2024 Castle Tankard would be etched in the memories of all who witnessed it, a day  where music, dance, and sporting excellence collided in a glorious celebration.
