“I can only speak my mind to my wife when drunk,” man tells court

Simon Muringani says that he is a reticent personality and can only speak out his mind when drunk, and that he didn’t realise that his wife would be offended.

Muringani made his submission in the Harare Civil Court where his wife Pretty Matsveru sought refuge from his abuse.

Matsveru presented that Muringani is abusing substances then abusing her in turn.

“He is on drugs and whenever he is high, he insults me. He sexually abuses me and labels me a prostitute, alleging that l have an extra-marital affair,” she said.

She said her husband was so uncouth that he hurls his insults indiscriminately.

“He follows me where l work and insults me and my customers,” she said.

According to the complainant, she and her husband are not formally employed and use their house as their place of business.

She highlighted that whenever they squabble, her husband just goes off with the youngest child, aged three, leaving her stressed about the child’s safety.

Muringani, in his defence, said he never thought his actions would propel his wife to seek a peace order against him.

He denied assaulting Matsveru and told the court it was difficult for him to have a meaningful conversation with her while sober.

“There are some things that l will be wanting to ask her, but l cannot do that when l am sober. Since we do our business at home there are some things to do with it that I’ll be asking her, not knowing she finds that offensive,” he said.

The magistrate did not buy that story and granted Matsveru a peace order barring Muringani from assaulting and insulting his wife.
