Govt launches virtual classroom in Chivhu, steps up access to ICT learning infrastructure

Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier services on Monday launched the first virtual classroom at Makumavi Primary School in Chivhu, Mashonaland East Province, a move government says is aimed at improving learning activities as well as marking significant strides towards a technologically sustainable educational landscape in the nation.

The virtual classroom was also launched at 16 other schools in Chivhu, with the event at Makumavi being graced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The initiative seeks to make learning easy through distance learning, maximising on technological infrastructure with internet connection.

Posting on X, the Minister of ICT, Tatenda Mavetera said that virtual classrooms are a step towards leveraging technology in creating an online learning environment, with students attending live lessons, participating and gaining access to educational resources remotely.

The minister also revealed plans to expand the initiative across the country so that students all over the country can benefit, adding that it will be a revolutionary element to the education sector.

“I am thrilled to announce the successful launch of our virtual classroom initiative at Makumavi Primary School in Chivhu and 16 other schools. This momentous occasion, graced by the presence of His Excellency, the President of Zimbabwe Dr E.D. Mnangagwa marks a significant step forward in our nation’s educational landscape.

“Imagine a classroom where students can learn and interact with teachers and classmates, not just from their desks, but from anywhere with an internet connection. Virtual classrooms leverage technology to create an online learning environment. Students can attend live lessons, participate in discussions, and access educational resources – all remotely.

“The launch in Chivhu is just the beginning. We aim to expand virtual classrooms and interactive boards across Zimbabwe, ensuring all students have the opportunity to thrive in this dynamic learning environment. This initiative holds immense potential to revolutionise education in our country, empowering future generations with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed,” she added.

The event also complements work by the ministry to provide access to internet and information in marginalised societies, with recent commemorations of World Telecommunications Day in Madziva, in Mashonaland Central being testament to the drive to promote innovative ICT and establish requisite infrastructure.

At the commemorations, the minister also launched the Madziva Community Information Centre, an ICT post to service the community with free internet, printing and surfing services.
