Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Harare hosted the the 2024 K-Pop Festival: Show Me Your 'K' on May 22 to mark the beginning of a several month celebration of 3 decades of diplomatic relations with Zimbabwe.
The events will cater for broad interests.
In July the embassy will host an exhibition of Korean and Zimbabwean art made from recycled materials at the National Gallery of Art.
Top Taekwondo team Kukkiwon will visit Zimbabwe from Korea in September to perform in the country.
The celebrations end in October with the K-Festival in Harare featuring Korean B-boying dance team, Jinjo Crew in addition to Korean traditional music, food, and interactive workshops.
The Republic of Korea was one of the countries that established diplomatic relations late with Zimbabwe, 14 years after the latter’s independence.
The ties are set to deepen as Zimbabwe reorients its foreign policy with the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit reflecting The Republic of Korea’s own thrust to cultivate Africa.
President Mnangagwa and Foreign Minister Fredrick Shava both attended the summit.
According to the embassy website, Ambassador Park Jae Kyung who arrived at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Harare, Zimbabwe in June 2023 was previously the Director General of the ASEAN and the Southeast Asian Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA.
He has also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ottawa, Canada.
After joining the Republic of Korea Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994, Mr. Park worked at his country’s MOFA headquarters, including the North American Affairs Bureau, the European Affairs Bureau, as well as the ASEAN and Southeast Asian Affairs Bureau.
He has also served at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Canada, Indonesia, Myanmar, the U.K., and Serbia.
Mr. Park holds a BA from Seoul National University and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
Trade
Trade between Zimbabwe and the Republic of Korea is not very significant. Korean tourists who at one time reportedly numbered over 20 000 annually have fallen to around 2 000. Korea mostly imports raw tobacco from Zimbabwe and in turn exports chemicals to the country.
