Twenty-five people have been killed in road accidents across Zimbabwe in the past 10 days, prompting government ministers to vow a crackdown on reckless drivers and operators of unsafe vehicles.
Transport Minister Felix Mhona said the high number of fatalities was unacceptable and blamed human error and violations of road traffic regulations. He specifically pointed to a recent accident involving a commuter omnibus without proper documentation that collided with a truck, claiming six lives.
Mhonas announced a coordinated effort with other ministries to address the problem, emphasizing stricter enforcement of road traffic regulations and improved enforcement by police and vehicle inspectors.
Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe echoed Mhona's concerns, stating the president's dissatisfaction with the accident rate. He pledged to review police enforcement procedures and road traffic regulations to enhance safety on Zimbabwe's roads.
