The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration on Monday donated essential medical equipment to Chivhu Hospital, in a move expected to improve healthcare delivery in Chikomba West. The event also saw Youth Empowerment Minister Tinoda Machakaire call for greater accountability in public institutions, particularly in the health sector, as he raised concerns over the misuse of state resources by some government officials.
Speaking as Guest of Honour at the handover ceremony, Machakaire thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his leadership and commitment to national development, while strongly criticising officials who abuse public trust and government programmes for personal gain.
“President Mnangagwa wants every one of us to live better and well, so we should not be found disrespecting or insulting the president. If the president gives you a title or job, you should fix the mess and make sure you follow his directives that is his job, to direct,” Machakaire said.
He added, “But we know there are those scandalous [people] close to him that want to self-enrich when given a task. Can we say the president is failing in that case? When you send a child for an errand and that child disobeys the order, is it the parent who has wronged or the child? That is the problem we have.”
Machakaire condemned the illegal diversion and sale of government-issued medicines, some of which he said were being found in private pharmacies or being sold behind public hospitals.
“We know there are corrupt people in our hospitals, who divert medicine towards their own pharmacies. Some sell medicines behind our hospitals. I will speak to the president about that, because I represent the youth,” he added, urging healthcare workers to maintain integrity and professionalism in service delivery.
The ZINARA donation included stretcher beds, scan machines, oxygen machines, wheelchairs, bandages, and over 45 hospital bed sheets, a vital boost for Chivhu’s frontline healthcare system.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Itai Ndudzo, commended ZINARA’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, saying it demonstrated how state institutions could contribute meaningfully to community development.
“State institutions must continue to support local communities in line with the national vision,” he said.
Chikomba West legislator and ICT Deputy Minister Hon. Tatenda Mavetera also applauded the donation and praised the the president for keeping Chivhu Hospital operational as a nurse training centre.
