A Chitungwiza man, Brighton Kanyama is on the run after selling non-existent residential stands in Nyastisme, Chitungwiza together with her wife, Monica Manavire.
The 45-year-old wife appeared before Magistrate Dennis Mangosi on charges of fraud and has been detained.
The complainant in this case is 50-year-old, Pelagia Takawira.
According to the prosecution led by Takudzwa Jambawu, on February 1, 2023, Takawira was informed by a friend about Manavire's purported sale of a residential stand near Corner Store in the Nyatsime, Chitungwiza, and was provided with her contact information.
After contacting Manavire, Takawira was told that the stand belongs to their children.
Takawira and her daughter visited Manavire's residence where they met her and her husband who is still at large.
The couple allegedly informed them that they were selling two 500-square-meter properties for US$3,000 each and arranged for a man to accompany them to view the properties in Nyatsime.
Following the viewing, Takawira expressed interest and informed the accused that they would return the next day.
The following day, Takawira, Lucia Muperi, and Dorothy Matsangura went back to Manavire, handing over US$700 to her, which she acknowledged in the presence of Kanyama.
It is alleged that Takawira made the payment on behalf of Lucia Muperi.
They agreed that Takawira would pay the remaining balance in monthly installments of US$500.
Between February 1, 2023, and October 31, 2023, Takawira made multiple payments, totaling US$3,700 for Muperi's stand and US$4,250 for Epiphania Takawira's stand.
Each payment was acknowledged by the accused and her husband.
In November 2023, Takawira attempted to develop the properties but was approached by the true owner, who revealed that he had purchased the properties in 2007.
Upon this discovery, Takawira confronted the accused, who provided her with a forged offer letter, confirmed to be fake by the Chitungwiza Municipality.
The matter was then reported to the authorities, with the total loss amounting to US$7,950.
