A 25-year-old Bulawayo woman and her 17-year-old accomplice were arrested on October 31 after they were found in possession of 5.5 kilogrammes of marijuana (mbanje) with an estimated street value of more that ZW$3,8 million.
Acting Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said around 10am on the day, police in Bulawayo arrested Melisa Gwizi of Lobengula West and a 17-year-old juvenile from the same suburb for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.
She said police acted on a tip-off from alert residents that there was a Lobengula West house that was being used as a drug base. They also got information on a consignment of mbanje that was coming to the same house from South Africa using a cross-border transporter.
Asst Insp Msebele said when police arrived at the house, the juvenile tried to conceal the drugs by throwing the parcel over the wall into the next yard but police managed to recover it.
The parcel was opened in the presence of the two accused persons, leading to the discovery of eleven (11) packs of marijuana.
The two were subsequently arrested and the 5,5kgs of marijuana with an estimated street value of ZWL$3 850 000 were recovered.
Asst Insp Msebele thanked residents for aiding police efforts in dealing with the drugs scourge.
“Let us fight the scourge of drug abuse, illegal cultivation and selling of dangerous drugs by reporting any persons that are illegally dealing in dangerous drugs to the police,” said Asst Insp Msebele.
