Dynamos sweat as debt to former striker threatens CAF dream

A US$27,000 debt owed to former striker Evans Gwekwerere nearly derailed Dynamos’ return to the CAF Confederation Cup this season. The Glamour Boys were on the brink of being disqualified from the continental competition due to the outstanding payment.

CAF regulations stipulate that clubs must be financially sound and free from legal disputes to participate in its tournaments. Gwekwerere, who had multiple stints with Dynamos, claimed the club owed him the substantial sum and, with the assistance of the Football Union of Zimbabwe , escalated the matter to CAF.

The continental football governing body was poised to block Dynamos’ participation unless the debt was settled. Facing the prospect of missing out on the Confederation Cup, Dynamos executives were forced to scramble for funds. They managed to raise US$17,000 to appease Gwekwerere, with a promise to pay the remaining balance within three months. The parties eventually agreed on a total settlement of US$20,000.

A club insider revealed that the situation was a result of years of negligence. “The club has been avoiding paying Gwekwerere what it owes him since he won his court case,” said the source. “It was a reckless oversight that could have had disastrous consequences.”

The timely resolution of the financial crisis allows Dynamos to focus on their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup campaign, where they will face Zambian side ZESCO United in the preliminary round. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the financial challenges facing Zimbabwean football clubs and the potential consequences of ignoring their financial obligations.
