Fully suspended sentence for rapist teen

New Ziana – Two teenagers aged 19 and 15 were brought before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court on rape charges for sexually assaulting a mentally challenged 15-year-old girl.

The incident occurred on October 25th, 2023.

The complainant, a 15-year-old girl with mental challenges, was at home playing in the evening when she was called to join the accused persons behind the house.

Once behind the house, the accused individuals ordered the victim to lie down and proceeded to remove her clothes, before taking turns to rape her.

The complainant’s mother suddenly appeared on the scene, resulting in the duo fleeing from the scene.

The traumatized victim then confided in her mother about the horrific ordeal, and a police report was promptly filed, leading to the arrest of the two perpetrators.

The 19-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while the sentence for the 15-year-old boy was suspended for 5 years. The younger accused was placed under the custody of a probation officer for 6 months.

In an unrelated incident, a 21 year old man from Gwanda was brought before the Gwanda Magistrates’ Court facing rape charges in that he raped his 7 year old niece. On the 24th of April 2024, the complainant’s mother left her in the custody of the accused person (her brother) while she went to the borehole to fetch water.

The accused person then took advantage of the absence of the complainant’s mother, called the complainant where he was seated.

He took off her dress upwards, removed her panties and raped her once.

The complainant screamed alerting her mother and when the accused person saw the complainant’s mother approaching, he ran away. The complainant narrated her ordeal to her mother and a police report was made, leading to the arrest of the accused person. He was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment.
