Dinson Iron and Steel Company, a subsidiary of Tsingshan Holding Group, has commenced production of steel billets at its plant located in Manhize, near Mvuma.
The company began producing pig iron in June.
According to a post on Disco's social media pages, the company has officially started producing steel billets, a semi-finished product used in the manufacturing of various steel items.
"Exciting news! We've taken another step forward—DISCOSTEEL has officially started producing steel billets," the company said.
The production of steel billets is a crucial step towards achieving the company's goal of producing 600,000 tonnes of steel products annually in its first phase, which is expected to increase to 1.2 million tonnes in the second phase.
Disco's plant has been operational since June, when it started producing pig iron, an intermediate product used in the iron industry for steel production. The company plans to expand its product range further by starting the production of steel bars in October, which are used in construction.
In a recent development, Disco refuted allegations of work-related deaths at its steel plant.
The company stated that it has not recorded any fatalities since the inception of the project and emphasised that the well-being of its employees, stakeholders, including the local community, and the general public remains its top priority.
"The company wishes to unreservedly express that these unfounded allegations are baseless and intended to cause disinformation. For the record, our company has not recorded any work-related fatality since the start of the project and for a project of this magnitude; it is a commendable safety record," the company noted.
