A shock defeat at the hands of Caps United has dealt a significant blow to FC Platinum’s Castle Lager Premier League title aspirations. The Zvishavane-based giants were outplayed at Rufaro Stadium yesterday as William Manondo’s solitary strike secured a crucial victory for the Green Machine.
The loss sees FC Platinum slip to second position on the log standings, one point behind new leaders Simba Bhora. This unexpected setback has thrown the league race wide open with 12 rounds of matches still to play.
For Caps United, the win was a much-needed boost after a winless streak of six matches. The Harare giants climbed to ninth position on the table, breathing new life into their season.
Manondo's goal, his 10th of the season, not only secured the victory for Caps United but also extended his lead at the top of the Golden Boot race. The striker’s impressive form has been a catalyst for the Green Machine's resurgence.
Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe lauded his team's performance, highlighting the impact of wingers Phineas Bhamusi and Junior Bunjira. The duo’s pace and creativity proved to be a constant threat to the FC Platinum defense.
"I am extremely happy for Manondo," Chitembwe said. "He is a natural goalscorer. He worked so hard to get where he is today and the sky is the limit for him."
FC Platinum will now have to regroup and refocus as they look to reclaim top spot. The pressure is mounting on Norman Mapeza's side to respond positively to this setback and maintain their title challenge.
The league race is far from over, and with several twists and turns expected in the remaining matches, the battle for the championship is set to be a thrilling one.
