Police Commissioner-General, Matanga has revealed the deployment of officers across the country to maintain peace and security in the wake of the Heroes and Defense Forces public holidays that will precede the forthcoming SADC Summit, a development he says is aimed at assuring a safety stay of dignitaries and tourists.
The revelations by the Commissioner-General comes at a time the public has raised concerns on the recent patrol movements in suburbs such as Chitungwiza, Mbare and Mabvuku, with armored military and police vehicles making part of the convoy.
In a statement seen by Zim Now, General Matanga implored the public to desist from criminal acts and abide by the laws of the country, adding that the police presents and patrols are not limited to towns but across the country.
“It is also a fact that the SADC Summit is going to be preceded by the 2024 commemoration of the nation’s Heroes and Defense Forces holidays. I’m this regard, the Zimbabwe Republic Police deployments will cover all these high profile events.
“May I therefore urge Zimbabweans to exhibit the law abiding citizen philosophy through which our country is known for in the world. Let us welcome all the SADC dignitaries and tourists as we reiterate the police’s guarantee to their safety and security,” he said.
He also warned motorists to be cautious when driving, noting that unroadworthy vehicles will be impounded. He further extended his warning to liquor stores operating without a license noting that they face closure.
“In this regard, police officers deployed on road blocks and other traffic enforcement duties will impound all unroadworthy vehicles and take stern action on any motorist who will be found driving through red traffic lights.
“The police will also take decisive action against anyone operating unlicensed liquor outlets or shebeens during this period,” he added.
Fears arose among the public of heavy presents in the city and suburbs, concerned that they are on high alert to thwart planned protests during the Heads of State Summit.
