Four men have been remanded in custody after they were found in possession of a live pangolin worth US$5 000.
Silvanos Makuto, 44, Edmond Muchakata, 40, both of village 7A, Chief Budzi, Bikita, Willias Tongei,38, of Munorweyi village, Chief Nyashanu, Buhera and Brian Njerere, 30, of Highfieds, Harare, were arraigned before the Masvingo magistrates’ court for contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act.
It is the state’s case that on August 13, 2024, Parks and Wildlife Management Authority officers received a tip-off to the effect that the accused persons were in possession of a live pangolin which they were offering for sale.
“Armed with the information, they teamed up with the police officers and posed as potential buyers. They met the accused persons at Nehanda Business Centre, Bikita.
“The accused persons brought a brown sack containing a live pangolin,” the National Prosecuting Authority said.
The fourth accused person revealed the contents of the sack, leading to their immediate arrest.
The accused persons were remanded in custody to August 29, 2024.
