Tendai Gwenzi, from handball court to community champion

Tendai Gwenzi, a name synonymous with handball excellence in Southern Africa, is more than just a skilled athlete. He is a visionary leader who has transformed his passion for the sport into a powerful force for social change.

Born in Harare and raised in Chitungwiza, Gwenzi’s journey to becoming a handball standout is a testament to resilience and determination. His introduction to the sport was accidental, but it quickly became an integral part of his life.

"I went to Seke 5 primary school. I lost my father when i was in grade 7. I proceeded to Zengeza 4 high, and that's where I meet handball," Gwenzi recalls.

A pivotal moment in Gwenzi’s career came when he was selected for the Zimbabwe national team, only to be heartbreakingly dropped due to his age and lack of a national ID. This setback, while painful, fueled his determination to succeed.

Gwenzi's talent extended beyond the handball court. He excelled academically, securing top student honors at Zengeza 4 High. Despite facing financial challenges, he continued to pursue his handball passion, joining Kanosvova's first-ever club, TC Alliance.

After relocating to South Africa, Gwenzi’s handball journey continued to evolve. He co-founded Thunderbolts HC, a club that has rapidly risen to prominence. His experience with the Zimbabwe national team exposed him to the challenges facing handball in the region, inspiring him to expand Thunderbolts HC's focus to include social development initiatives.

Through the Thunderbolts Academy, Gwenzi aims to provide opportunities for young people in disadvantaged communities. The program addresses basic needs, fosters personal growth, and cultivates skills development.
