A 38-year-old man from Manyara Village under Chief Mutema is set to be examined under the Mental Health Act after he murdered 70-year-old woman and 4-year-old juvenile.
The accused person appeared before Chipinge Magistrates' court facing two counts of murder.
Allegations are that on August 18, 2024, the accused person struck Sofia Sithole, 70, at the back of the head with an unknown object and she died on the spot.
He also struck Rachel Sithole, 4, on the head resulting in her instant death. The incident took place at the deceased's homestead in Manyara Village after the deceased arrived home from an all night prayer.
The accused person placed the body of Sofia under a stack of thatch grass and burnt it beyond recognition.
He took the body of Rachel and placed it on the bed inside the thatched bedroom hut. Member of the community effected a citizens arrest on the accused person.
He was remanded in custody to August 30, 2024 and was advised to apply for bail at the high court.
He will be examined in terms of the Mental Health Act.
