A woman has been arrested and charged with fraud after allegedly selling a nonexistent piece of land to a buyer.
Nyaradzo Chinyadza, a 28-year-old resident of Belvedere, appeared before a Harare magistrate on charges of defrauding a complainant.
According to the prosecution, Chinyadza approached the complainant in June and claimed to have a plot of land for sale in Norton. She took the complainant to the site, convincing her of the property's authenticity.
The complainant was interested in the land and paid Chinyadza US$300 as a deposit for plowing the land. Subsequently, Chinyadza requested an additional US$400 to be given to her workmate, Anisha, on behalf of the complainant.
After receiving the money, Chinyadza failed to deliver on her promise to provide the land. She allegedly made excuses and ultimately deceived the complainant.
The complainant realized she had been scammed and reported the incident to the authorities. Chinyadza was subsequently arrested.
