Warriors star Jordan Zemura has expressed his disappointment over Zimbabwe's inability to host international matches on home soil due to the lack of approved facilities. The talented defender believes that playing in front of a home crowd brings a unique energy and motivation to the team.
As Zimbabwe prepares to kick off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with an away match against Kenya, Zemura admitted the team's longing to play in front of their passionate supporters. The Confederation of African Football has condemned Zimbabwe's domestic stadiums, forcing the Warriors to play their home matches in neutral venues.
Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Zemura emphasized the importance of playing at home: "It's a great shame that we are not playing at home. Playing at home in a stadium full of your supporters brings a sense of joy and motivation." He fondly recalled the atmosphere at the National Sports Stadium when it was packed with cheering fans.
The Warriors have faced the challenge of playing "home" matches outside the country in recent years, including against Nigeria in Rwanda and Lesotho in South Africa. Zemura acknowledged the team's determination to return to the Afcon finals after missing the last edition in Ivory Coast.
He expressed optimism about the team's chances against Kenya, a formidable opponent that has recently defeated Zimbabwe in several encounters. Zemura emphasized the importance of a strong start to the qualifying campaign and expressed his belief in the team's ability to overcome Kenya.
"We are very confident and ready to go. We just need to work hard," Zemura said. While he acknowledged Kenya's strength, he also highlighted the Warriors' own quality and determination.
Zemura, a senior player in the squad, has been a valuable asset to the team since receiving his first international cap in 2021.
