The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe has implemented a ban on broadcasting advertisements from self-proclaimed prophets and traditional healers.
This decision, announced by BAZ chief executive Tandai Kapumha, aims to protect the public from deceptive claims, including promises of miraculous cures and quick wealth.
Some of these ads had led to serious consequences, such as advising patients to cease taking modern medicine, which reportedly resulted in deaths.
In addition to banning such figures, BAZ also prohibited advertisements for traditional herbs and medicines that cannot be scientifically verified.
This action is based on the Broadcasting and Services (Code of Conduct for Broadcasters) Regulations, 2023, and the Broadcasting Services (Licensing and Content) Regulations, 2004.
The authority instructed all broadcasters to cease airing this content immediately, prioritizing the protection of consumers from further harm.
