A man who allegedly claimed he could process a Certificate of Sponsorship for the United Kingdom and disappeared after receiving payment has been brought before the courts.
Temba Dzamwarira, 48, from St Mary's, Chitungwiza, appeared before magistrate Ethel Chichera at the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing fraud charges.
According to the State, represented by prosecutor Polite Chikiwa, the complainant approached Dzamwarira in November 2023, believing he was an agent capable of processing a Certificate of Sponsorship for her child, who wanted to go to the United Kingdom. Dzamwarira allegedly requested US$1,500 to facilitate the process, and the complainant initially paid him US$500.
In December 2023, the complainant reportedly gave Dzamwarira the remaining US$1,000, with the promise that the process would be completed by the end of the month. However, from that point onward, Dzamwarira became unreachable when the complainant sought updates.
The complainant later visited Dzamwarira's workplace but found no one there.
Despite multiple attempts, she could not locate him.
He has been ordered to return to court on September 30, 2024.
