The Pan-African Parliament, under the African Union, has expressed its solidarity with the victims of the recent flood disasters in Nigeria and other parts of the African continent. This declaration was made during the 12th Annual Conference of Speakers of National and Regional Parliaments held in Midrand, South Africa.

In a statement signed by the President of the Pan-African Parliament, Fortune Charumbira, the conference highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive response to natural disasters, which are being exacerbated by climate change and inadequate infrastructure.

The statement underscored the commitment of African governments to addressing the devastation caused by these disasters.

Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states in Nigeria were recently ravaged by severe floods, leading to loss of lives, displacement of communities, and the destruction of property. The Pan-African Parliament’s call for intervention coincides with the Nigerian delegation’s appeals at the conference. The delegation, led by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has repeatedly advocated for swift action to mitigate the crisis.

A statement issued on Saturday by Kalu’s Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, emphasised the need for international and regional support for the affected areas.

"We, the Speakers of African Parliaments, convened at this important conference, express our profound solidarity with the people of Nigeria and all victims of flooding across the African continent. Recent catastrophic floods have caused widespread devastation, resulting in loss of lives, displacement of communities, and significant destruction of infrastructure.

“The Speakers called on African governments and the international community to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions for the victims, ensuring that solidarity is translated into concrete actions that uphold human dignity and resilience in the face of adversity,” reads the statement.
