A Namibian woman was arrested on Tuesday morning at OR Tambo International Airport after being found in possession of a large quantity of suspected cocaine. The 30-year-old woman was apprehended by South African immigration officials following a tip-off from local police.
Intelligence gathered by the South African Police Service indicated that a drug mule would be arriving on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil. As the woman passed through immigration, she was intercepted and taken for a medical examination. X-ray scans revealed that she had ingested numerous drug-filled bullets.
So far, over 60 of these bullets have been recovered from her body, with authorities estimating that the total weight of the seized cocaine could be around 850 grams. The estimated street value of the drugs is approximately ZAR30 million.
The woman has been detained and is expected to appear in court on Wednesday on charges of dealing in drugs and drug possession. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges being brought against her.
