In a bid to enhance road safety and ensure compliance within the driving school industry, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe  has launched a nationwide crackdown on unlicensed driving schools.

The initiative, which involves inspections across the country, aims to regulate driving schools and promote responsible driving practices. With approximately 500 registered driving schools in Zimbabwe, 159 of which are based in Harare, the TSCZ has emphasized that all driving schools must meet regulatory standards.

Mrs. Lucy Kuwandiri-Mapfumo, TSCZ’s Media and Corporate Communications Officer, explained that the council's role is to register, regulate, and monitor driving schools to ensure they operate within the law and provide proper driver education. "Our inspections are designed to ensure compliance and protect student drivers from being exploited by bogus or non-compliant driving schools," she said.

Driving schools failing to meet the required standards could face serious consequences, including the inability to have their students tested at the Vehicle Inspection Department . The TSCZ's vision is for Zimbabwe to produce competent, well-trained drivers who prioritize road safety. The ongoing blitz is part of this mission, and driving schools found operating without a license could face deregistration.

"Driving schools must take these inspections seriously and prioritize safety to avoid penalties," said Mrs. Kuwandiri-Mapfumo.
