Zimbabwe has overturned the trade deficit that defined its relationship with China as the country has strengthened its export base.
This was revealed by China’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Guo Shaochun, during a media workshop hosted by the embassy for mainstream Zimbabwe media houses in Harare this Wednesday.
Ambassador Guo said trade between the two countries totaled US$1.734 billion in the period. Zimbabwe imported mostly machinery from China and exported agricultural produce in turn.
The main export is tobacco. Zimbabwe recently got a permit to export citrus fruits to the Asian giant. This is a huge feat for the country as the giant and lucrative Chinese fresh produce market is quite difficult to penetrate.
China is also working with local farmers to ensure that quantities and quality meet the standards of the destination market.
The workshop was convened for discussions between the embassy and media practitioners on the significance of the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party held at the end of last month in Beijing.
Ambassador Guo said China is focusing on modernisation, the Chinese way.
This entails material, cultural and ethical advancement, which respects unique national traits.
Ambassador Guo said that China will continue to work with Zimbabwe to achieve Zimbabwe’s visions.
