India and Zimbabwe are set to deepen cooperation in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors following a meeting between Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health and Child Care, Hon. Dr. Douglas Tendai Mombeshora, and the Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Bramha Kumar.
“We are eager to enhance collaboration in healthcare and pharmaceuticals and believe Indian investors can play a crucial role in advancing Zimbabwe’s health sector,” Dr. Mombeshora said during the meeting.
Dr. Mombeshora urged Indian pharmaceutical companies to consider establishing manufacturing plants in the country. He also extended an invitation to Indian hospitals to set up branches in Zimbabwe to boost healthcare infrastructure.
The dialogue further explored potential cooperation between Zimbabwe’s Medicines Control Authority and India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization.
The parties discussed strengthening regulatory ties to improve pharmaceutical standards in Zimbabwe.
The talks also included plans to renew a Memorandum of Understanding on Traditional Medicine and Homeopathy, along with establishing an Ayurveda Chair in Zimbabwe as part of a broader initiative to promote alternative medicine.
Additionally, capacity-building cooperation between the two countries was highlighted as a key area for further development.
This meeting underscores Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to attract foreign investment and bolster its healthcare system, with India emerging as a pivotal partner
It comes after Dr. Mombeshora’s visit to India in August 2024, where he joined Vice President Constantino Chiwenga for the 19th CII India-Africa Business Conclave.
