A 40-year-old man, Tendai Chikowore from Mutare was arraigned before the Mutare Magistrates’ courts facing rape charges.
The allegations states that on July 6, 2024, the complainant ,31, went to Tendai’s shrine seeking spiritual guidance.
She was told that she needed cleansing.
The court heard that Tendai also instructed her to rub herself with some ashes in a nearby bush.
While applying the ashes in the bush, Tendai suddenly appeared pushed her down.
She fell down facing upwards, after which he raped her once.
The court also heard that the complainant tried to scream for help but he ordered her voice to mute and she lost her voice.
After the act, he told the complainant that she should not argue with the Holy Spirit and she also needed to be cleansed to get her voice back.
The National Prosecuting Authority said that the complainant could not still speak when she made a police report, she had to write the ordeal on a piece of paper.
‘’After his arrest, Tendai Chikowere performed some rituals for the complainant to regain her voice.’’ said the authority
Tendai Chikowere was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment of which 3 years were suspended.
He will serve an effective 17 years in prison
