A passport scandal involving the fraudulent issuance of travel documents to four Cameroonian nationals has raised serious concerns about the country's vulnerability to terrorism and human trafficking.
At least 20 suspects from the Registrar-General's Office have been arrested in connection with the case, which has exposed the weaknesses in the passport issuance process.
Chipo Matovanyika, one of the suspects, appeared before Harare regional magistrate Stanford Mambanje for a bail application. The investigating officer, Christopher Tarenyika, argued that Matovanyika had committed a serious offense by facilitating the fraudulent issuance of passports.
The State alleges that the Cameroonians were given the passports by Tapiwanashe Hove and his accomplices in Harare. They attempted to cross the border into South Africa but were apprehended by immigration officials.
The scandal has highlighted the need for stricter measures to prevent fraudulent activities and ensure the integrity of the passport system. The arrest of multiple suspects from the Registrar-General's Office indicates that the problem is more widespread than initially thought.
