A mountain collapse in the Democratic Republic of Congo has unveiled vast copper reserves, drawing global attention to the mineral-rich Katanga region.
The collapse, captured in viral footage, occurred in Haut-Katanga Province, part of the Central African Copperbelt, known as the largest and richest mineral belt in the world. The video shows crowds gathered at the scene, with some running for safety as massive rocks fell.
The country already boasts some of the world’s highest-grade copper deposits, prized for their exceptional quality and cost-effective extraction. In addition to copper, the region holds substantial quantities of cobalt, uranium, tin, and zinc.
This discovery has sparked concerns over the protection of these resources, with many urging measures to prevent foreign exploitation. Copper remains one of DR Congo’s most valuable exports, critical to global industries such as electronics and renewable energy.
